The accelerated changes in the Communication Highway are rapid and mind-boggling. Even as the communication lines open up, there are many instances where as human beings we fail in our basic communication skills as we try to cope with this phenomenal change in our livesAdded to that relationships are becoming abbreviated, as abbreviated as SMSes.In the early 1970s, Richard Bandler, a mathematician and computer scientist in the University of Santa Cruz, and John Grinder, a professor of Linguistics, in their research on excellence studied successful people. What Bandler and Grinder noticed was the consistency with which these successful people used words, moved about and moved their eyes when performing certain mental functions. But communication glitches are bound to happen, especially in this fast-paced world.
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) is a form of applied psychology that shows you how your mind works to enable you to make sense of the external world and help you overcome these communication glitches.
The magic of NLP is that we too could programme ourselves to be more successful and better people, says Dr. A. Abraham, Director of MindMasters and a master practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming in an interview. Excerpts:
The youth often find it difficult to communicate in English especially in a job interview. What should they do to communicate effectively?
English is taught as a subject not as a language and the students tend to learn in the mother tongue and then convert it to English. Even in spoken English Classes, the emphasis is on grammar. The flow of the language will come only when it is not translated literally.
Those who wish to be fluent in English should watch BBC and CNN and speak constantly in the language.
There is nothing wrong in making mistakes. Failure is often considered a taboo. People prefer not to learn rather than fail. But the more you fail the more you learn. If one can overcome the limiting self-belief then one can do anything.
How can teachers teach better? How should the parent handle the child?
The word "Teach" is the culprit and should be removed from the vocabulary. The teacher should only enable a child to learn, not force knowledge into his head. It should be an experience. Teachers often tend to hide behind the `Learning Disability' label as the reason why a child cannot understand, when in fact the reason may be teaching disability.
The teacher should use all the preferred language channels while addressing a class because if the teacher uses only one of the preferred languages then 2/3rd of the audience is likely to switch off at any given time. Children tend to learn faster during the kindergarten stage because there is not much teaching there. As for parents, the days of authoritarianship are over. The best thing to do is to put oneself in the position of the child (perceptual position) to understand the child better. Rather than take a stance against them it is best to understand them and their dreams.
Could you tell us why call centres often fail to give satisfactory results?
The training imparted at call centres is unfairly speaker-oriented communication. The emphasis is on accent and voice training and there is very little on understanding of the mental makeup of the caller, who should be the prime factor. What is important is that call centres give us the desired results, not just mouth "Have a nice day". NLP understands the world of the caller through the five senses and their thinking styles and tries to speak in the preferred language of the speaker. The call centres need not necessarily use NLP but they should try to understand the customer.
In this rapidly changing world what is the future of marriages. What should two people do to keep a relationship going?
In the modern scenario what is happening is that there is equal opportunity and choice for both. The wife is exposed to the same world as the husband and sometimes the choices are more for the woman.
What is imperative for a marriage to survive is mutual trust and respect for each other's world. Listen rather than assuming you know what the other means.
How can one manage stress?
Stress is power and should be managed to work for you than against you. NLP believes there is a positive intention to every action however bad the action is.
If the positive intention is identified then the real problem can be dissolved easily.

WHAT STOPS you from having the things in life you want?
Money, time, boss, parents, partner, fate or bad luck? What is interesting about these answers is that the cause is external to you and outside of your direct controlIn order to understand how you can influence your external world, you need to understand how your thinking affects your internal world and so your state of mind, says Dr A Abraham, dermatologist-turned NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) practitioner.
His 50th birthday reflected another landmark in Abraham's life, one that transformed his life and perceptions completely. He gave up his flourishing practice in the UK, returned home to Thiruvananthapuram and became a zealous NLP practitioner.
Drawing from the tools and methods of NLP, Abraham has evolved his own technique which he calls The Better You Programme, designed to unleash the hidden human potentials and make the mind work for you.
Here, Dr Abraham elucidates his principles:
What is NLP all about?
"Neuro" refers to the neurological processes of seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling and tasting which form the basic building blocks of our experience. 'Linguistic" refers to the ways in which we use language to represent our experience and communicate with others. "Programming" refers to the strategies we use to organise these inner processes to produce results. NLP shows that success is the result of specific pattern of thinking and pinpoints what happens when we think and the effect of our thinking on our behavior and that of others. It facilitates one's communication both within and with others in a way that makes a difference between mediocrity and excellence.
In a nutshell, NLP can be presented as having a clear idea of the outcome in any given situation; being alert and keeping the senses open so that one notices what one is getting; having the flexibility to keep changing what one is doing till one gets what one wants. In essence NLP is about learning to learn. There are no bulky manuals as the brain is the best manual and only needs proper process-oriented tools. The brain is like a one-million gigabyte neck-top PC, but without an instruction manual. NLP provides just that — the Driver software.
Then what is "Better You"? How is it different from NLP?
It is based on the principle of NLP. It is a subtle form of psychology which tells you how your mind works and is basically concerned with the "how" of things rather than the "what" or "why." For instance, if you have a problem, most people are concerned with what is the problem. In doing so, you are actually re-traumatising the person. NLP asks ‘how you made a situation into a problem’. Now if you can answer this question, you can re-train your mind so that that the problem no longer seems to be so.
NLP is an attitude and methodology that leaves behind a trail of techniques. The attitude involves one of intense and excited curiosity, willingness to experiment and to take all failures as feedback. It focuses on what you want, how you want to be and how to find the resources and attributes you already have to assist you in making changes. This means that dramatic improvements in your life can be accomplished in a relatively short time. Along with NLP, "Better You" incorporates Brain Gymnastics which fine-tunes our brain to make it more effective and alert. Besides, soft baroque music is played throughout the sessions. This music has special significance since its beats are 60-62 per minute which is the beat of the resting heart. With this soft music in the background, your heart will start synchronizing with its beat and you become calmer and more peaceful.
How exactly does this retraining happen?
Our brain basically has a lot of filters. We take in information through our five senses. We filter it through our beliefs, values, generalizations and process it and form an idea which is quite different from reality. We seldom see reality. If, for instance, you disagree with me, you do so not because the reality is different; it's just that you see differently. So far, every communication skill that has been taught, is speaker-oriented and listeners are ignored in the bargain. NLP shifts the emphasis from the speaker to the receiver so that when I speak to you, I do so the way you would like to understand.
Is there any specific training or technique for this?
We have five senses and communication requires us to use three of them — seeing, hearing and feeling. However, each of us seems to prefer one sense predominantly over the other two when gathering information. For example, if 1 were to speak just two words. North Pole, it might evoke different responses from different people. You for instance, might visualise an Eskimo, an igloo or feel cold. So you use your visual sense more than the other senses. So the next time that I speak to you, I would use more visual terms to reach across to you. Every time that you communicate with people, they are giving you plenty of clues to tell you that either they understand you, are indifferent to what you're saying, or what you talk goes above their heads. If you make it a point to note these clues, you know you have to alter your mode of speaking to them in order to truly communicate with them.
But how do you achieve this when you are addressing a diverse group of people, each one may have different senses predominating?
In such a case you have to keep switching from one modality to another. As far as communication is concerned, adhere to the visual, auditory and kinesthetic (feeling) modes, periodically altering them to reach all members of the audience. Also, another important clue that listeners give is their eye movement. If they are looking upwards, it: implies they are visualising; if they are looking down, it means they're feeling. So accordingly you use terms to reflect these modes.
Where does the state of mind appear in all this?
Yes, that's another factor which is important in NLP. Your performance in any field at any particular time depends on the state you are in and NLP has got a technique called Anchoring by means of which you can get into any state of mind whenever and wherever you want. For example, if a certain piece of music or song lightens your spirits and makes you feel good. Or if a particular incident or experience made you happy. Since we cannot physically recreate past experiences, we have a technique by which we anchor that experience to our system by physically applying pressure to some part of our body say, a finger. This pressure becomes a trigger to recall and relive that joyous experience. In doing so, we are practicing positive reaffirmations, using a physical catalyst. This in turn allows us to switch to the pleasant mode when we feel daunted by any situation, like appearing for an exam or interview or consultation with a doctor for an ailment.
But is this not something like positive thinking, the reaffirmations associated with it?
Yes. But there's a subtle difference. Positive thinking can also become positive forgetting after a while. But the physical catalyst in this NLP technique due to anchoring helps keep us in the positive state.
What kind of problems does NLP deal with?
The approach of NLP is not restricted to any particular symptom or applications. It is successfully applied to diverse fields including psychotherapy, counseling, education, health and business. It has enabled people come out of phobias, traumatic situations, depression, addiction to smoking, to deal with stress and negative emotions like anger, in a constructive manner.
Today NLP is widely used in business to improve management, sales, achievement and performance. It helps the growth of inter-personal. and intra-personal communication skills whereby employers' skills in recruiting the right kind of people, to the right jobs is augmented. Further, Perceptional Positioning would allow individuals to see things in a broader perspective, more from the others' point of view and hence make for healthier atmosphere, whether in the workplace or elsewhere. In education it facilitates better under-standing of the learning styles of students, developing rapport among teachers, students and parents. It improves the art of learning, motivation and enables the students to realise the hidden talents they believed only others had. It enables you to become an effective communicator and negotiator and helps you see your failures as opportunities to make things work for you.
What are the limiting factors to NLP and I "Better You"? Are there areas where it will not be workable, in the health area, for example. Will it be able to cure dia betics or hypertension?
Firstly, you yourself would be the limiting force for the workability of NLP. If you honestly seek a "Better You," you will practice, the techniques and exercises that the sessions teach and advocate; Like any other system, it needs you to apply yourself to it. Yes, but what it does is, once you get started on it, you are practically hooked to it because it's a highly motivating tool you cannot resist. To be very honest, it does not directly change your medical conditions. Of course, wherever stress contributes to your malady, "Better You" will help you deal with your stress in the right manner and thereby mitigate to some extent the intensity or frequency of your health problems

We are dwelling in pressure and stress ridden times, so much so that we are not 'living' but merely existing/going through the motions of life in a routine, mechanical manner. In the pursuit of success, with ill-defined, often uncertain, goals, we find ourselves embroiled in the inane things of life, unable to free ourselves from the shackles of our own mind and being.
The Better You Programme developed by Dr A .Abraham, is typically for those of us trapped in this web.
Dr Abraham is Chief Consultant, a Certified Practitioner of NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programme) and a member of the Association of Neuro Linguistic Programmers, UK. He has evolved a unique methodology based on the principles of NLP which is the central theme of the Better You Programme.
The specialist dermatologist turned NLP practitioner, Dr Abraham has a vast experience in conducting workshops, seminars and counseling programmes in various techno-commercial organizations, institutes of higher education and societal groups.
Mesmerized by the vista of opportunities available through the practice of NLP, Dr Abraham gave up his flourishing medical practice in the UK, turned to NLP as a means of unleashing the hidden human potential to optimal benefit, evolving as a better, more organized and productive individual in the process.
How exactly does the Better You Programme work?
Dr Abraham: This is a concept I have developed, drawing from a whole range of techniques including NLP, which is practical to apply and practice. It takes you to a path of self-discovery which in turn will enable you to strengthen your ""positive traits and work on your weaker aspects. How much do you know about what's going on inside yourself and others? Have you ever wondered whether what you are perceived to be isn't what you really are?
The Better You Programme is designed to unleash the hidden powers within you and make your mind work for you. Not only for yourself, but also for your family, employer and peers.
How is it that your practicing this technique will alter others' attitudes and behavior?
It is essentially a journey into intra and inter-personal communication. It is all about knowing what is going on inside you and what happens when you deal with others.
It is a pragmatic technology based on an individual's inherent ability to produce a desired •outcome that would enable him to create his future. It also emphasizes the effect on brain gymnastics and music on improving your daily life.
In the area of strengthening familial ties, how does this programme help?
When you throw the doors open for communication, by which I mean a two-way one, it helps parents to understand their children's thought processes better, their dreams better. When this happens, they are able to support and motivate them in the right direction and help them, guide them choose what they really want in life. Parents assume the role of friend and guide rather than an authority to be listened to at any cost.
Perceptual positioning helps to understand the different points of view and make for a feeling of camaraderie amongst family members.
But will this be equally applicable to the work front where the emotions are very different from what you share with family members?
A sale is all about bringing a background need or desire into the foreground of someone's attention. It's all about focus. In order to sell something you need to sell the fantasy of what the product will do for their dreams. So know that the person you are selling to, has a need for your product or create the need. A good sales job is to make everything that one buys, make him happier every time he looks at it. Don't sell the rat trap. Sell the absence of rats. Don’t sell me toys, sell me play-things to make my children happy!
But how do you train someone to do these things?
The technique helps you to know what you want and the mental strategies to get them. It trains you in such a way that it puts you in the right mood to do what you need to do. You learn a new sharpness in observing the people you are communicating with, you are enabled to read the micro-muscular facial signals that tell you how your message is being received. It helps you broaden your creative thinking in management and problem solving the programme will help you to understand how to process stress and activate the positive effect of stress to benefit.
How is your programme different from other positive thinking and management techniques which promise similar results?
Personal success depend largely on your ability to communicate. In this respect, what you say matters little compared to how you say. We train you ii techniques to do this. We initiate you into ways of learning so that you can recollect easily, take tests and interview s-with confidence. The techniques involve changing from a non-productive mood to a productive one wherever needed through a process termed anchoring; In this sense, the Better You is different from all other programmes on positive thinking and the like.

Neuro Linguistic Programming: A Key to Business Excellence
In the present scenario of rapid change and technological advancement, academicians and management professionals around the world are in a dilemma as how to achieve competitive edge to promote performance in this era of stiff competition.
Abstract
In the present scenario of rapid change and technological advancement, academicians and management professionals around the world are in a dilemma as how to achieve competitive edge to promote performance in this era of stiff competition. The globalization of the economy has opened up floodgates of knowledge and opportunities for them but it has also brought new challenges as how to manage it. Probably the greatest challenge that is presented by globalization is the management of the human resource pools. This is true at a macro (overall staffing levels) and micro (delegation of work to labor pools) level. Human resource management is now assuming a greater role to strategic business partners. Successful companies realize that true competitive advantage lies in their people. They have been forced to redefine their responsibilities and develop a compelling response for critics who dispute human resource’s value to the bottom-line. The aim of the present study is to examine the role of NLP in building up the organizational capabilities and paving the way to business excellence. The data was collected through the use of questionnaire and structured interviews conducted with different clients of select companies based at southern part of India. The results was further analyzed and compared with the findings of secondary research undertaken to study the genesis of Neuro Linguistic Programming. It was revealed that NLP gives the managers and staff a quantum leap in the efficiency to work with, understand and motivate other people, both individually and in groups. An NLP oriented manager is sound in all aspects especially with the human factor which is the only one vital element in this scenario.

Abstract
Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is an up and coming area within psychology. The theory suggests that the human brain can be Programmed much in the same way as a computer can and offers methods in which this can be done, however, whether or not NLP works has raised a lot of dust, with equal number of people arguing for either side. In this paper we attempt to link NLP with business excellence through the Malcolm Baldrige model for business excellence. The paper first gives a brief about NLP, its origin and a short history, followed by a description of the Baldrige Model for Excellence. It further goes on to apply NLP concepts to influence the criteria for the Baldrige model of excellence. The seven criteria of the Baldrige model, each give us an idea as to be what is to be done within our company in order to lead it to excellence. However NLP gives us the ‘how’. This paper goes on to show that NLP can be a very useful tool in moving towards business excellence, the various concepts of NLP such as Cartesian logic, meta programs, VAK, goal setting and outcomes, can be very effective in positively influencing the various parameters of the Baldrige excellence award. In normal TQM, a part of the process is to identify key measurement criteria. These criteria are very important from the point of view of a process improvement. If at all the criteria chosen are wrong, the even if the process is improved, it may not reflect in the given parameters. The Cartesian logic is very useful as a tool for ensuring that the right parameters are chosen. The Cartesian logic ensures that the mind does a simulation of what is expected to happen and this will ensure that the correct parameters are chosen. Another area where NLP is especially useful is in the customer focus and employee focus areas of the Baldrige model. NLP is an especially effective tool for understanding others’ needs and making others’ understand your needs. Basically, customer focus and employee focus require just these. Through the use of NLP concepts like VAK, Values and beliefs, Timelines, branding, eye accessing cues, and meta programs, this understanding can be easily generated and maintained. NLP also can be used for stress management which is important from the employee focus point of view. In stress management, NLP concepts used would be frame – reframe, metaphors, and anchoring wherein the cause of stress can be reduced to a great extent. In conclusion, we acknowledge that NLP is still not considered as an exact science by all. Nevertheless NLP could work as a valuable tool in achieving business excellence. However, it must be kept in mind that tools are only as good as the users, so use of NLP by an uninitiated person, need not yield excellence. As stated before, it can tell you how to do what you want to do, but you need to know beforehand what you want to do.
